Worm composting

AT the UU fellowship this morning, the kids learned about worm composting and each came home with a worm compost container bin.  They got to decorate the containers.  From what I saw, Owen’s favorite part was using the drill to make air holes for his Tropical Red Wiggler worms.

I guess the idea is to feed the worms stuff the we would normally throw away, the worms eat it, then we eventually throw their “castings”; i.e. poop, into the garden.  In case you were wondering, here are all the things we can feed the worms: vegetable scraps, shredded newspaper or office paper, coffee grounds, eggshells, dryer lint, plain pasta or rice, and plain bread.

Great to hear about children getting into worm composting. It is definitely an excellent educational opportunity! Looks like they did a fantastic job with the set up. Re: pasta and bread (and other starchy wastes), I would definitely recommend adding them in moderation for a small indoor bin. They can get really moldy quite quickly and won’t appeal to the worms. Broken up and mixed around in the bin (again in moderation), they should be just fine! :-)
